A Complete Beginner’s Guide
When I was new to content writing, I had no idea that writing could be monetised in so many different ways. Over time, as I kept writing and learning, I discovered multiple monetisation models — which I’ll cover in some other post.
One of those methods is Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing).
In this post, I’ll focus only on Amazon KDP and share how I managed to sell 100+ books on the platform as a new author, without any prior audience or overnight success.
This Was Not an Overnight Success
You might be thinking that I wrote a book, published it, and suddenly the sales started pouring in.
That’s not how it works.
This is not an easy-money scheme. Selling books on Amazon KDP requires:
- Proper product and topic research
- Writing genuinely high-quality content
- Crafting a clear and attractive book description
- Designing a cover that actually convinces people to click
In fact, I published multiple books that completely failed — some of them had zero sales.
But with consistent writing, learning from mistakes, research, and the right approach, I finally managed to make one of my books perform well. That book crossed 100+ sales, which is a big milestone for a new author.
So let me break down exactly how I did it.
But with consistent writing, learning from mistakes, research, and the right approach, I finally managed to make one of my books perform well. That book crossed 100+ sales, which is a big milestone for a new author.
So let me break down exactly how I did it.
1. Writing the eBook
The first and most obvious step is writing the eBook itself.
You can’t sell a book if you don’t have one.
I started by:
- Creating a clear content outline
- Dividing the book into logical sections
- Expanding each section step by step
- Editing and fixing grammatical mistakes
You don’t need any fancy tools to write an eBook. You can easily use:
- Google Docs
- Microsoft Word
- Or any other text-editing software
Once the writing is done, download the file in .docx or .pdf format, as Amazon KDP accepts only these formats.
2. Designing a Compelling Cover
Once the eBook is ready, the next important step is designing the cover.
This step is often underestimated, but it matters a lot.
People do judge a book by its cover.
Your cover is the first thing a potential reader sees, and it plays a huge role in whether they click on your book or scroll past it.
I focused on making the cover:
- Clean and readable
- Relevant to the topic
- Promising enough to spark curiosity
You don’t need to be a professional designer. Tools like:
- Canva
- Photoshop
These two tools are more than enough to create a solid book cover. You don’t need any fancy software to do so.
3. Publishing the Book on Amazon KDP
Now comes the part most people think is the end — but it’s actually just the beginning.
5 Easy Steps to Publish Your Book:
- Create an account on Amazon KDP
- Fill in your personal and payment details
- Upload your eBook and cover
- Write a proper book description
- Publish
Once published, your book goes live on Amazon.
And then you wait.
But here’s the truth: sales don’t magically appear after publishing.
4. Marketing: The Most Important Part
This is the most crucial — and honestly, the most daunting — part of the entire process.
Marketing is what decides whether your book gets sales or stays invisible.
As a new writer with no massive audience, I managed to get sales in two main ways:
a. Free Book Promotions (Amazon KDP Select)
I enrolled my book in the KDP Select Program.
This allows you to run free book promotions and also get paid based on pages read, not just direct purchases.
These promotions helped my book reach new readers, gain visibility, and build initial momentum.
b. Direct Sales Through My Content
It also drove sales directly through my own content.
What I actually did was:
- Wrote articles on my main website, mentioning and promoting the book
- Shared related content on social media platforms
- Naturally linked the book wherever it was relevant
This helped me get direct sales from people who already trusted my content.
Key Takeaways From My Experience
If you’re planning to start with Amazon KDP, here are a few things you should always keep in mind:
- Write high-quality, useful content
- Create a clear and attractive book cover
- Don’t ignore marketing — use
- Free Book Promotions
- Kindle Countdown Deals
- Blog posts
- Social media
That’s it for this post.
If you want to know the exact amount I earned from selling 100+ books on Amazon KDP, stay tuned for the next post. I’ll break down the numbers honestly and transparently.
